One flag, four designs, four times of day. The clouds and the light change from stamp to stamp while the sun stays on the flag, and every one is drawn from below so the eye is pulled upward. Laura Stutzman painted them in gouache on illustration board and Ethel Kessler was the art director. Gouache is the reason the sky reads as flat color rather than as photography.

Four designs in one book is worth something practical: a run of envelopes stamped from the same booklet does not look mechanically identical. Sold in booklets of 20 and in coils of 100, 3,000 and 10,000, so the format follows the volume - a coil for desk work, a booklet for occasional letters.
